Personal:
Rich grew up playing club soccer in Rockford, IL and the Chicago suburban area leagues. His early coaches groomed him to play any and all positions, which helped him get selected to “State Select” teams (pre-ODP) and the early beginnings of the ODP program. He was a three-year varsity player at Rockford Guilford high school where he was a two-time captain and earned honors for all-Conference, all-Sectional and High School Player of the year for the NIC10 Conference. After high school, he played his collegiate career at Lewis University while earning his Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science. He was a four-year starter, two-time captain and earned honors for all-Conference (twice) and all-Midwest Region his Senior year. After graduating from college, Rich had the honor of training and trying out for 2nd division teams in Scotland under the guidance of a Sheffield United F.C. legend. After returning to the States, he hung up his competitive boots due to injuries and trying to establish his career within Business Intelligence, which eventually moved him to Wisconsin in 1996.
Rich had the honor of being trained by numerous USSF A licensed and professional coaches throughout his playing career. He attributes his playing success and coaching philosophy to all of his fantastic coaches and role models. They did more for him than teaching the game. They taught life lessons on how to deal with adverse conditions and use problem solving skills to find a solution – both individually and as a team.
Early on, Rich dabbled in coaching by helping his coaching friends with high school teams and coaching at summer camps. He really didn’t take to coaching seriously until his daughters started playing and he realized that he had a lot to offer. He has a passion to share what he learned from his experiences and pay it forward to the next generation of players. He focuses on how players can get better – both as a player and as a person.
Rich is a huge advocate for the basics and technique and realized that his previous coaches had helped him set the tone for his coaching philosophy – attitude, first touch and game speed. He knows that making mistakes is part of the game and part of life. He teaches the kids how to pick themselves up after a mistake and tries to always keep them moving forward.
